Fantasy Golf 2012 The Players Preview

The PGA tour is back in full swing this week with the Players (formerly known as the Players Championship) event on tap at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida from May 10-13. This is the 39th year for the PGA-sponsored Players event, and long-time tour vet KJ Choi is the defending 2011 champion.

Although not officially a “major” PGA tour event, the Players event offers a $9.5 million dollar prize purse this year and is frequently referred to as the “fifth major.” The island green at the 17th hole of the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass has become one of the most well-known holes in all of golf.

Young Irishman Rory McIlroy is the number one ranked player in the world currently, and is the favorite to win the Players in salary cap fantasy golf leagues at Draft Street ($37,057). McIlroy is the second pick at Buzz Draft and will cost you $24,500 to include on your card this week. Englishman Luke Donald is the top pick at BuzzDraft ($25,000). Lee Westwood is the second pick at DraftStreet and can be had for $32,231. He is the third pick at BuzzDraft and is priced at $24,000. Tiger Woods has dropped to fourth pick at DraftStreet ($25,730) and sixth at BuzzDraft ($22,500) after his poor performance at Quail Hollow last week.

Live Player’s Championship Fantasy Golf Long Shots

There are 144 participants in the 2012 Players tournament, one of the largest fields of the year, which means that favorites are relatively expensive and sharp PGA fantasy golf league players will want to do some research this week to find a few live lower-rung long shots to add to their cards. A few suggestions based on recent form and past performances at TPC Sawgrass are offered below.

Aaron Baddeley – Baddeley (a $13,400 value at BuzzDraft, $16,066 at DraftStreet) is playing some of the best golf of his life right now, and has made the cut in 17 out of 22 events this tour season. He also has five top 10 finishes to his credit, and has been in the top 10 at the Players two out of the last three years.

Ben Curtis – If you want one of the hottest golfers on the tour right now on your card, you should consider Ben Curtis. He had a slow start to the season, but won the Texas Valero Open three weeks back, then finished 15th the following week, and came in 5th at the Wells Fargo Championship last week. You can pick up Curtis this week for $15,157 at DraftStreet and an amazingly cheap $7900 at Buzzdraft.

Bud Cauley – Cauley is a PGA rookie, but he has made the cut in seven out of the eight events he has participated in, and has two top 10 finishes. Cauley is also a native of the Jacksonville area, and he has told reporters he estimates he has played the Players Stadium Course at least one hundred times. You can pick up Cauley for $9700 at BuzzDraft, but it will cost you $12,982 to add him to your card at DraftStreet.

Padraig Harrington – Harrington is a 17-year PGA vet who has slipped to an 89th world ranking this year (13 out 18 cuts with three top 10 finishes), but Harrington still has some gas left in the tank (he shot a round of 61 at the Transitions event earlier this year!) and has played well at Sawgrass in the past. Harrington will cost you a salary of $11,312 at DraftStreet and $11,900 at Buzzdraft.
