2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic Fantasy Golf Preview

While many golf fans are looking ahead to next week’s U.S. Open, the PGA tour is focusing its attention on beautiful Memphis, Tennessee, where the Fed Ex St Jude Classic will be played on the TPC Southwind course this weekend (June 7-10).

2011 St Jude champ Harrison Frazar is returning to defend his title, and he is joined by a several big names in the PGA, including Rory McIlroy, Zach Johnson, Dustin Johnson, and Graeme McDowell. As is typical the week before a major, however, a number of the top golfers such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are taking the week off.

PGA fantasy salary cap league players have got to do their homework this week as many of the usual suspects are MIA, but this provides an opportunity to think outside the box and dig deep to find some lower salary players that offer real value.

Despite his recent slump, Rory McIlroy is the favorite this week at DraftStreet, and he will cost you $40,630 to add to your card. Some golf pundits have opined surprise at McIlroy playing this week, but trying to play your way out of a slump before a major seems like a no brainer to me. Zach Johnson is the second pick at DraftStreet at $38,164, and then there is a big drop off to Dustin Johnson as the third pick at $27,817.

FedEx St. Jude Classic Mid-Range & Long Shot Picks on DraftStreet

Bryce Molder – Molder is the 106th ranked player in the world and the 23rd pick this week at DraftStreet ($16,350), so he is certainly no dark horse, but he does offer some real value as he has made 15 out of 27 cuts this season, and has six top 10 finishes to his credit.

Jimmy Walker – 33-year-old American Jimmy Walker is another mid-range pick that offers solid value. He is currently the 116th-ranked player in the world, and has made the cut in 16 out of the 24 PGA events he has participated in this season, with four top 10 finishes. You can add him to your PGA salary cap fantasy league card at DraftStreet for just $16,056.

Y.E. Yang – Yang is one of two Korean players ranked in the top 125 in the world in the world (he is 66th), and is having one of his best years in 2012, having made 13 out 18 cuts, and with an impressive five top 10 finishes. He can be picked up for just $12,744 at DraftStreet, and seems like an obvious pick to me.

Davis Love III – 27-year PGA tour vet Davis Love III turned 48 this year, but he is still getting the job done on the course. He is the 164th ranked player in the world, and has made 13 cuts out of 22 events this season, along with two top ten finishes. Love offers good value as the 64th pick at DraftStreet this week with a salary of $11,659.
