2012 Travelers Championship Fantasy Golf Preview

The U.S Open is a tough act to follow, but the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut still manages to draw a full field every year, this year including last week’s U.S. Open Champ Webb Simpson, the top two finishers in the Masters - Bubba Watson and Louis Oosthuizen, World No. 7 Matt Kuchar, and 2007 Travelers winner Hunter Mahan. 2011 Travelers Champ Fredrik Jacobsen is also returning to defend his title.

The 2012 Travelers Championship is being played on the TPC River Highlands course, which is in great shape for the tourney this year due to a streak of cool spring and early summer weather, including this week. The TPC River Highlands director of course maintenance Thomas DiGrandi said the greens will be fast, but not the penal putting surfaces the golfers dealt with last week at the Olympic Club. Long drivers do have an edge here at TPC River Highlands, as there are three or four holes where those who can drive the ball 300 yards accurately have a big advantage.

Matt Kuchar is the favorite in the $100k salary draft leagues at DraftStreet, and will cost you $35,214 to add to your card. Hunter Mahan is the second pick at $32,557, and Bubba Watson is the third pick at $30,583 despite missing the cut at the Open last week.

Travelers Championship PGA Fantasy Golf Value Plays

Webb Simpson – Simpson is the 4th pick at DraftStreet ($29,919), and is not “cheap” by any means, but picking up a hot golfer in good form (currently 5th in world) for less than $30,000 is always at least worth thinking about…especially in a field missing several of the top names.

Charl Schwartzel – Schwartzel is the 16th ranked player in the world, and is the 18th pick at DraftStreet this week ($17,890). He has only participated in eight events this year, but has made the cut in five of them, including two top 10 finishes. Schwartzel put in a steady performance at the Open last week, finishing at +10, tied for 38th.

Johnson Wagner – Wagner did not join the tour until age 25, and the last couple of years have been breakout years for him. He is currently ranked 66th in the world, and has made 10 cuts out of the 17 events he has participated in (four top 10 finishes). Wagner has not been playing exceptionally well of late, but he is due to break out of his slump soon. And you can add him to your salary cap league at DraftStreet for just $15,416.

Seung-yul Noh – Korean Noh has been a model of consistency this PGA season, having made the cut in 14 out of 18 events (and seven in a row including the U.S. Open last week). He also has two top 10 finishes to his name this season. Noh is currently ranked 116th worldwide, and you can have him on your DraftStreet card for $13,669.

Cameron Tringale – Tringale has only been playing on the PGA tour for four years, but the young American is already ranked 111th and has made the cut in 12 out of 16 events this year, with four top 10 finishes. You can add him to your DraftStreet card for just $11,643.
