Fantasy Baseball - Starting Pitcher Analysis Wed. 6-27-2012
Posted on Jun 27th, 2012 09:56 AM

With the 12:30 ET start time, we’re going to include all of the pitchers in the chart again, but only write-up the evening games. This is something that’s usually done on full schedule days with start times prior to 1pm. I suppose that we could utilize the weekend format on these occasions if that was the opinion voiced by the readers, so let us know.
A full glossary, explaining the chart columns in detail can be found here. Many stats in the chart were compiled using the fangraphs.com database. We’re now referencing Seamheads.com for Park Factors. Feedback and suggestions are welcome and encouraged. What would you like to see in our DFB Starting Pitcher Analysis? AMERICAN LEAGUE
Los Angeles (AL) @ Baltimore 7:05 ET
J.Weaver: As you can see in the chart above, Jered Weaver is not nearly as good on the road as he is at home. This park could pose a problem for him, although the Orioles are slumping offensively. In addition, although Weaver only allowed 2 hits and not a run in 6 innings in his return, he’s struck out a total of 13 in 30.1 IP since his no-hitter with a high of 4 after not having struck out less than 5 in any start previous. Weaver as a fly ball pitch to contact pitcher is not nearly as daily fantasy valuable even if he can still prevent runs.
J.Hammel: Hammel has been great recently, having not allowed an earned run in 17 innings with only 6 hits and 2 walks against 18 K’s (60 BF) in 2 starts, but the Angels have scored at least 5 runs in 5 of their last 6 and have been on fire. This recent surge has not only driven Hammel’s ERA down, but his price way up.
Detroit @ Texas 8:05 ET
D.Fister: Fister had a rough 1st inning in his last start, but settled down to have a nice game. He should keep the ball in the park here for the most part, which is good, but his defense does him no favors and Texas has many ways to beat a pitcher.
R.Oswalt: How good was Roy Oswalt in his 1st start as a Ranger? That’s not something we can expect every time out and the velocity was closer to what it was when he had his back troubles last year than when he was healthy. That’s not to say he’s not healthy now, but you should note his performance was something less at that velocity last year.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Pittsburgh @ Philadelphia 7:05 ET
J.McDonald: Chase Utley may be back for the Phillies today, but don’t expect a mid-30’s 2nd basemen with arthritic knees who hasn’t played in 9 months to perform miracles. McDonald still hasn’t allowed more than 3 ER’s in a start this season, but he’s been doing it with less K’s recently. After coming off a stretch where he struck out at least 7 in 7 of 8 starts, he now hasn’t gone beyond 5 and has a total of 12 K’s in his last 3.
Bullpen: Seriously! The Phillies don’t have a pitcher for Wednesday night and are going to go with some sort of bullpen combination. Rumor now is that Raul Valdez will get the start, but don’t expect him to go more than a few innings.
Arizona @ Atlanta 7:10 ET
T.Cahill: Cahill allowed 6 ER’s in his last start, but with no difference in batted ball ratio and a 5 to 0 K/BB. In fact, he’s struck out at least 5 in 7 consecutive starts, which gives him some additional fantasy value as a ground ball pitcher. The Braves have not scored less than 4 runs though in their last 6 games, much of that due to Mr. Heyward.
T.Hanson: You might be able to forgive allowing 4 HR’s in Yankee Stadium on a hot day, but Hanson’s career low 2.11 K/BB and 20.1 K% have significantly reduced his daily fantasy value, if not his price.
St Louis @ Miami 7:10 ET
J.Kelly: Joe Kelly really hasn’t done much to impress (15.1 IP – 23 H – 6 ER – 2 HR – 2 BB – 8 K – 72 BF – 28.8 LD%), except strand runners at an unsustainable 82.6% clip, since his debut.
A.Sanchez: In June, Sanchez is walking more batters, striking out less, and allowing both more HR’s and ER’s in general. Other than that, he’s been great. Regard that in his 1st 10 starts, he allowed more than 2 ER’s only twice, but hasn’t allowed less than 3 in 4 June starts.
San Diego @ Houston 8:05 ET
C.Richard: Clayton Richard’s road starts in non-west coast stadiums have been pretty historically horrific.
L.Harrell: At this point, with only Coors Field left, I was legitimately worried that we were going to get all the way through with nobody. Then Mr. Harrell stepped forward and saved us. After going through a stretch of 4 starts @COL, vSTL, @CHW, @TEX of course nobody was looking for anything from him when he struck out 9 Indians and only allowed a run in 7 innings. However, here he is after that performance in a somewhat reasonable spot, against a below average offense at a very good price. He hasn’t been all that bad this year when you consider where and against whom he’s had to pitch. Most days I’d probably slap a Sleeper tag on him, but I don’t have that luxury today. Top Value
Washington @ Colorado 8:40 ET
J.Zimmermann: Why sites refuse to significantly drop the price of visiting pitchers in Colorado is beyond me. Once in a while, they’ll survive the experience, but you can’t expect them to pitch anything close to their normal game.
J.Outman: The 75 pitch limit has not stopped Outman from allowing at least 4 ER’s in each of his last 4 starts. It just takes him less time to do it now. Yes, even the Nationals can hang a double digit number on the scoreboard in Colorado.
*Top Values Wednesday: Lucas Harrell
Good Values: None
Sleeper Alert: None
Top Draft Targets: Harrell???....Cahill?
*Players are priced differently across sites. A top value on one site may not be so on another. All values are a consensus generalization.
No, I was really worried we weren’t going to find one tonight. You could try Cahill too if you must or maybe even Oswalt if you’re desperate, but it’s risky.
