2012 Greenbrier Classic Fantasy Golf Preview
Posted on Jul 3rd, 2012 07:41 AM
The Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia is this week’s stop on the PGA tour, and there had been some question whether the Old White TPC Course would be ready for the tourney given the powerful storm that moved through the area last Friday and damaged over 80 trees on the course. That question was resolved on Monday when Jim Justice, chairman and owner of The Greenbrier, announced that the tournament was still on. He praised the hundreds of volunteers and tournament vendors for their nonstop efforts since the storm, and said their hard work is the reason the tournament will “go off without a hitch.”

The oddsmakers at DraftStreet have definitely decided Tiger Woods is back as they have installed him as the favorite this week at a heady price of $45,617. There is an almost $12,000 drop to the second pick Webb Simpson at $33,823. Dustin Johnson is listed as the third pick at $31,184 and Phil “Lefty” Mickelson is fourth at $29,499. Defending 2011 Greenbriar champ Scott Stallings is back to defend his title and is listed as the 45th pick at $13,762.

Greenbriar Classic Tournament Schedule

DraftStreet $100k Salary Cap Fantasy Golf Lineup for the Greenbrier Classic

Phil Mickelson ($29,499) – You can’t say too much about Phil Mickelson still playing championship caliber golf at the age of 42, and with 23 years on the PGA tour under his belt he’s got the savvy to just play in tournaments he thinks he’s got a shot to win. Mickelson is the No. 14 ranked player in the world and has made 12 out of 14 cuts this season, with five top 10 finishes. Sure this is really just a warm up for the British Open for Lefty, but the same holds true for Tiger as well. Mickelson also has something to make up for after missing the cut at the Greenbriar last year.

Seung-yul Noh ($17,935) – No one on tour is playing more consistent golf than Seung-yul Noh right now. He has shot eight straight sub-70 rounds, leading him to a 12th place finish at the AT&T National last week. Korean Noh is currently ranked 119th worldwide, and has made the cut in 16 out of 20 events he has played in including three top 10 finishes. This is just Noh’s third season on the PGA tour, but he clearly has the right demeanor for the mentally demanding game of golf

Carl Pettersson ($17,028) – Long-hitting Swede Pettersson is another very consistent sort. He is ranked No. 40 in the world right now, and has made the cut in 10 out of 16 events with four top 10 finishes this season (total earnings over $2.5 million). He has also played well at the Old White TPC Course in the past.

Ben Curtis ($14,126) – Curtis is a 12-year PGA tour vet who is having a solid 2012 season. He is currently ranked 76th worldwide and has made six out of 9 cuts this year, including three top 10 finishes (and over $2 million in earnings).

Ricky Barnes ($11,921) – Ricky Barnes is definitely a less consistent sort, but he can play with the best when he gets hot. He is ranked 164th worldwide, and has made 12 out 18 cuts with one top 10 finish. His under $12k fantasy draft salary makes him worth serious consideration.

Boo Weekley ($9742) – Weekley is another less consistent golfer, but he too has shown flashes of brilliance. He is currently ranked 263rd, and has made the cut in nine out of 15 events this season. He might be a bit of a stretch after a less than stellar last few weeks, but call it a hunch that he is due for a break out performance.

Total salary cost - $99,621
